How close is Mac OSX to Linux 2335On Friday 14 July 2006 22:26, gmax2006 stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: How close is Mac OSX to Linux 2336 On 14 Jul 2006 13:26:27 -0700, gmax2006 staggered into the Black Sun and said: No. OS X is a Mach microkernel with a BSD-ish userland and syscalls. There's... No, it isn't, but it's related to it in a way. ;-) OS-X is built upon Darwin, which is in turn partly based upon FreeBSD. system. The *BSD's are however more closely related to eachother than they are to GNU-Linux. There is however software that exists in both operating system flavors - i.e. the *BSD's and GNU-Linux - namely things likebashandglibc,or theX11system, orApacheet al. It's just a matter of compiling the source code into binaries on the target system. There are many kinds of UNIX operating systems out there in the world. Some of them are released under an Open Source or Free Software license - such as GNU-Linux, which for most part is released under the GPL and compatible licenses - but there are also proprietary UNIX systems, such as SGI IRIX, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, et al. For more information regarding UNIX operating systems and their history, please visit... The bottom line is that GNU-Linux and OS-X are cousins. ;-) Software supplied as source code should compile well on both platforms. Software supplied as binary code only however is not compatible with both operating systems. Think of it as two different dialects of the same language, albeit that it's a bit more complicated than that. copy dvds Doesn't work that way. DVDs are encrypted with the lame CSS algorithm. It's so lame, that it was broken within months after the first software DVD player software... Technically, OS-X should be able to run software available to GNU-Linux if that software is compiled for OS-X. OS-X does feature GNUbashas a commandline interpreter, for instance. ;-) -- With kind regards, how does linux 2.0.x support vga On Tuesday 29 August 2006 22:35, Dances With Crows stood up and addressed the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.miscas follows...: Actually, the kernel can... *Aragorn* (Registered GNU-Linux user #223157)
