The gnome project is free software (GPL) and has released several versions; 2.14 is the latest. gnome is a large set of programs and getting it compiled is a lot of work- you'd be better off looking for the binaries for Suse (using yast). Each user can have a file in their home directory called, .xinitrc This file can specify which window manager X will use. If the file is absent, then the system wide default for that file is used,etc-X11-xinit-xinitrc. Note: comments inline. Caveat: I am not running Suse. I have given you a hint of where to start looking. Others may give you more precise information which applies directly to Suse. I like gnome 2.12 a lot.
