Not sure about off the shelf DSL modems..one needs to be a master I think, but DSL bridges are available, and work...very well. Pricey though as they are low volume professionsl devices.

I am fairly sure that Ethernet *switches* and cat 5 cable will do 10Mbps over 300 meters or so. May even be able to hit 100Mpbs.

So the technology you use depends on te distances and feasibility of transport media between them

Wifi. No media, line of sight, at least 20meters, can do 500 meters with good antennae and careful setting up. Until it rains,. Cheap.

IR. Expensive, line of sight, until it snows or fogs. Can do a kilometer or better.

Uwave..can do up to 5 miles..v expensive.

Now to copper technologies.

Baseband 'audio' asynch modems. Good for 56K on single twisted pair. Up to 20 miles. Cheap.

Synch modems, good for about 265Kbps, single or double twisted pair. Can do about 15 miles I think, but bandwidth reduces as line length increases. Expensive and obsolescent..

DSL style modems. Generally reaching towards 2Mbps or better these days, depending on distance. as expensive as synch modems, but outperform them by a significant margin.

10BaseT Good for 10Mbps, but limited to around 500 meters practically speaking. Must use a buffered switch each end.

100 baseT, good for about 30 meters.

Optical

multimode fibre..god for a couple of km per hop..cheap, and easily does 100MBPS.

Monomode fibre, less cheap, but capable of ten Km or more, and huge bandwidth. Still not that expensive IF you can get the fibre laid..
