Thanks for all your replies, guys. I'm including my answers to all below, to make things easier...

dev-cdrom is a symbolic link todev-hdc

You were right! There was no cable between CDROM drive and sound card (actually sound card is embedded in the motherboard in my system - Dell Dimension P4), so, to be more specific...

etc-fstab:dev-hdcmnt-hdccdrom iso9660 noauto,users,exec 0 0

I didn't mount them. Actually, you can't, because you'd get a "file system not found" error... I just inserted the CD, started KsCD and got the error reported earlier.

Michael Mauch THANKS! I've done as you suggested and now CD audio works perfectly for the non-root...

Jeremiah DeWitt Weiner

Got you. However, KsCD should work, but it doesn't. I tried workbone, but it stops right away after firing up with a "stopped #1" error message. I didn't download dcd. In my opinion there is clearly something the needs fixing with the system. Both KsCD and workbone did not work.

It's a very recent one. I doubt it. I can do everything except play audio CDs. You name it: mount data disks, copy data from, boot from cdrom drive, etc.

"ATAPI 48x CDROM" (I'm not going to open up the box to check make and model, but it is recent and I've never had problems playing CDs with windoze and doing about everything else with linux).

Dan Espen

If that cable weren't there, how could the system play audio CDs under MS windows? Or could it? I'm going to check later whether the cable is there.

Michael Black

I'll check for the cable as soon as I get offline, but, as you say, I am getting error messages and the CD player programs don't recognize or run the CDs at all.

Again:

'ls -ldev-cdrom':

'ls -lLdev-cdrom': brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 22, 0 Jul 7 08:25dev-cdrom

Bloody hell! You're right! I tried running KsCD as root and it did start running as if the CD were playing, but there's no sound. This is a step forward. Thanks. Now I need to find out how to set permissions so that the non-root user can also do that. I thought that: 'chmod 755mnt-hdccdrom' would do it, but evidently it doesn't...

Jim Haynes

'fuser' ondev-cdrom,dev-hdc andmnt-hdccdrom all returned an empty line (I buttume it means no program has the drive open).

I've established that by running KsCD as root the display shows the CD is playing - but no sound. So you are probably right. I'll shut down the PC and check if the cable is there in a moment...
