How to play audio CDs with linux 2302You were right! There was no cable between CDROM drive and sound card (actually sound card is embedded in the motherboard in my system - Dell Dimension P4), so, to be more specific, there was no cable connection between cdrom drive and cd audio connector on the motherboard. It takes a special cable with twin pins, and I was lucky to find one in my junk box. So I have used this cable to connect the cdrom drive to the MB. After restarting the system, I noticed right away that Kmix has now come alive with Pcm, Pcm2 and Gain volume control tabs in the audio out (which were absent before). I tried playing an audio CD with KsCD. Now the CD player display shows the CD playing but there is no sound. However, by plugging the earphones directly into the CDROM drive - no problem - the music is now heard loud and clear. So what remains to be done is: 1) to set the right access permissions for non-root user (how do I do that?) and 2) to get the sound that is now obviously available at the CDROM drive to be conveyed through the MB to the sound system.
