It is true that there are some snobbish domains out there that refuse to accept email except from certain "blessed" hosts (a known ISP's "smarthost" outgoing mail server. However, in my experience, most still accept email from anyone--as was intended before spam and viruses broke the internet. For the snobs, I use a "snob list" in postfix's transport table to direct email destined for those domains through Verizon's "smarthost".

You'll have to figure out solutions to the snob problem that work for your situation. I was simply pointing out that you can send email via SMTP out through eth1 without violating the rule about running a server.

You sound very wise. 1-2 :-) I'm told there are two kinds of people: those who have lost data and those who will lose data. It sounds like you're not in the former group.

My guess is any required software would only be needed during initial setup. I have had Verizon dynamic IP DSL at two different locations, and I have never had to run Windhoze to make it work. If the interface between the computers and Verizon's box is true ethernet, I would be Verizon has some goofy setup procedure for FIOS that only works with the Gatesware-based software.
