OK - any firewall being used? Can this windoze box ping the Internet? Can it ping the Ubuntu box?

OK. Can the Ubuntu box see the windoze box? Not necessarily the shares, but does it get a "Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused" when you try to telnet to 192.168.0.1?

OK

What happens? Do the computers catch on fire? What is the EXACT error message?

How are the computers connected to each other? Coax? Twisted Pair? Hub? Switch? If you connect the two DIRECTLY to each other with twisted pair cable, this needs to be a 'cross-over' cable - not the ordinary cable you would use to connect many computers to a hub or switch.

On the Ubuntu box, run the commands '-sbin-ifconfig -a' and '-sbin-route -n' and see what they look like. The 'ifconfig' command should not show error counts, but show packets sent and received, like this:

eth0 Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:D1:57:00:F0 inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:100907 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:92050 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 Interrupt:10 Base address:0x300
