FWIW - the VT6410 is supported in the latest kernel just fine.

The fact is that when the hardware is released, the vendor ships a Windows driver -- because they have contacts that require it (nevermind that they prototype the hardware under Linux instead of Windows these days).

Snip... Obviously, I can't "prove" it's "for pay" but I darn well know it's very "helpful" to certain commercial monopolies to sabotage support for their compebreastors, any way possible. I'll note my working...

Rick browsing and processor synch and All well and good, but how many of them actually work? been a changed. Maybe you should do some research before making an butt of yourself...

The "penguin squad" doesn't get a crack at writing a driver until after the hardware is released, and generally nobody bothers until people start using the hardware.

Incidentally, if you look at the patch that added VT6410 to the 2.6 kernels, it consisted of modifing a whopping 23 lines of the Linux kernel source code! By comparison, the Windows driver takes up close to 10M.

What get me is that you purchased 800 PCs from a "local builder" rather than a commodity vendor. If you purchased them from a large vendor, they would already have an idea of what hardware has the best Linux drivers. The boxes would be cheaper, certified to work with Linux, and you could be confident of the level of support. Moreover, who spec'd the (until recently) incompatible hardware without checking into things first? How did you catch that the RAID hardware had gone unsupported for a while but miss that the current kernel has a driver? Why didn't you get a spec system first to test? Why would you go to the trouble of specing a hardware RAID controller and settle on one based on the VT6410? Why cut corners there, of all places? Whoever is in charge is not exercising due diligence.

I do find it strange that you say you are "involved in networking and mostly use Windows". I have many friends and colleagues in IT and it seems to me that they simply can't get enough Linux personnel. They aren't hiring as many Windows admins and desktop support folks. My friends that had been MSCNEs and MCSEs are now going back to school to "learn Linux". I know my company (large pharma) has definitely migrated away from Windows for any of our research operations except e-mail and word-processing.

JeffRelf I have bought about 3 computers from Dell; these were for friends. We ran Red Hat Linux 7.3 on the oldest one (a Dimension 200) for several years...
