I think you just have to look around any large corporation, what are people still running on there desktops and departmental servers? Windows, and on the whole not any of the many flavours of Linux.

On the the face of it this seems like total madness because Windows is expensive and Linux is free. Trouble is as much as many of the Linux fans might not like it Windows is better as a desktop OS and I would argue better as a small'ish or departmental server as well.

On the plus side of Windows I would suggest it has a far larger driver database together with far more third party driver and hardware support.

In my experience, at least or more stable when used as a desktop system.

Better office suite by far (yes I know you have to pay for this) and just better integrated applications in general, many of which are simply not ported to Linux and run poorly if at all via an emulator like CAD programs etc.

When you look at it Linux has been around for some time now but has consistently failed to get a foothold on the desktop OS market. I believe the the reason is simple, Linux just doesn't cut it when it comes to a desktop OS when you take everything into account, true Linux is better in some quarters but not enough to make the grade I fear.

Don't get me wrong I am not a Linux hating pro MS person. I use both and find that Linux is great on my PC at home, that said it would be not so well suited in my place of work purely on software compatibility grounds, lack of AD intergeneration etc.

I think the anti capitalist anti MS Linux folk, many of which frequent these news groups would do far better than constantly slating Windows and get stuck into writing some decent stable software for Linux. Simple stuff like an Open Office document that when saved as a Office XP document so you can send it to a friend was actually legible at the other end.

Spoon poked his little head through the XP firewall and said: Not in our group. Server: We run a Win 2000...

It's little things like this that hinder Linux in the workplace. Make things more user friendly and dare I say it more compatible with Windows software and you might be onto a winner.

Sadly however too many people see this as a war where there can only be one victor, in which case I think Linux is in for a bit of a hiding.

7, in your humerous post, you have perfectly described every Windows admin nightmare. How to deal with uncontrollable users. Since the start of my job here, we have...
