You mean 2.6.8-11? That's an amd64 kernel. That architecture is not fully supported in Stable, which must be where you got it since the other releases have newer kernels. I don't think you mentioned that detail when asking about distros.

Not in a short Usenet post. Google can help. Basically, hotplug loads the driver, udev creates the device node, usbmount mounts the device. Hal and dbus communicate device info to any desktop environment that may be running.

You don't necessarily need udev if you just go with static device nodes indev, and you don't need hotplug if you put all the drivers you need inetc-modules.

That's how it was when Stable was released. Things have changed (see below).

Yes, udev and hotplug are evolving quite rapidly, but only in Sid and Testing. Stable hasn't changed.

If you are mixing them then you are running a completely untested configuration. If you are running Sid or Testing, well, then things will move (but why do you have an old kernel?).

Whether it works on amd64 I don't know, nor do I know whether the udev in Sid or Testing will work with earlier kernels. That kind of thing is one reason you really need to know what you're doing when you mix the streams.

I seem to recall that there's a demarcation point somewhere. Something about hotplug going away and udev taking over the job. But it was a few months ago when the transition happened. I think you can find some info in the debian-user mailing list archive.

But the transition happened in Sid and Testing. Stable hasn't changed (that's why it is called "Stable"). Which leads me to think that you are mixing things between the various releases, which is highly not recommended. Bad plan. Don't do it. You'll be sorry.

There is on my machine with Stable, but not on the one with Sid. Which again makes me think you're mixing and matching. DON'T DO THAT unless you know Debian inside and out.

You really do not want to be dowloading stuff from unstable and installing it on stable. Just don't do it...

apt-get usbmount

Should be all you need unless you've gone and done something dumb, but personally, I just mount my USB devices by hand.

Perhaps you ought to try a distro that holds your hand more. We're kind of getting bored of it.

Look, you're not getting it. The "latest udev in the stable distro" is the same one it has always been since the last point release several months ago. Upgraded versions do not...
