I really need some help here udevhotplugusbusbmount etc etc. 2024Baho Utot Ive probably ground through most of that last night. I did find that circular dependencies, broken code and a fairly strange package maintainer are features of the Debian Udev package. I am not the first it seems.by a long chalk..the net is full of plaintive cries on this scire...basically what happened piecing it together is that the package should never have installed - the one that comes with the base distro is correct I think, but if you get the latest, it should have needed a higher kernel than I had. However it installed without error, but failed to run, and that's what broke the system initially. After I reported this I did an update, and the same package then refused to be deinstalled because somehow its dependencies had changed...;-) What seems to be the case is that Udev replaces devfs, and USBmount (these days) and obsoletes hotplug, but without quite replacing all the functionality, because the GUI desktops don't need automounting to a fixed point - they have their own mounters as long as the basic raw device is in a unique location. I will have another crack at getting either Udev, the automounter, or a home written daemon to do what I want. But right now with less than three hours sleep, I am calling it a day ;-) I am happy enough with the unstable kernel anyway. Udev is in a state of flux as well, so I might as well wait for what arrives later on. Or patch it myself. Whatever. If someone knows where a useful place is to put it, I could probably throw some useful documentation together on the bits of it that I had to deal with - a sample 'howto'.
