If you used Windows before, why did you switch or now use Linux more 5080On Tuesday 11 October 2005 06:59, Adam McCarthy stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: When I purchased my first own computer - an i386 - it had DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0 on it. I actually didn't want the DOS-Windows combo but OS-2, and pending the first 32-bit release of OS-2, I used Windows for about six months. I then got OS-2 2.0 and about a year later 2.1, and I used that for about five years. Then I actually wanted UNIX, but commercially vended UNIX was very expensive. OS-2 was dead and my friends were all using Windows 95 (and later 98). Coming from OS-2, I didn't want to compromise and go back to an MS-DOS-based operating system, so I purchased Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. I was not a serious enough computer user back then, and I didn't even have an Internet connection at home. Then, late 1999 - after having used NT loosely for about three years - I purchased a boxed version of MandrakeLinux, and I got hooked. It was a Source Software philosophy appealed to me. I never installed Gnu-Linux as an escape route from Windows. I simply installed it and fell in love with it. It does everything that I need it to do, and it has helped me a lot in developing my IT skills. That's why I'm on Usenet now, advocating Gnu-Linux and sharing the knowledge I have gained over the years. ;-) There really *is* a place for Microsoft Windows in the world. It just doesn't happen to be on my machine. I actually cringe if I ever have to sit at a Windows box - which is usually for helping out clueless Windows users when they've contracted a virus, spyware or some other Windows-related problem. ;-) -- With kind regards, If you used Windows before, why did you switch or now use Linux more 5081 On Wed, 12 Oct 2005 16:24:38 +0000, stan This depends on what you mean by "unix". What is, versus what is not, unix, is a long... *Aragorn* (Registered Gnu-Linux user #223157)
