But, to answer your question, there were two reasons why I switched to linux. The first was that I was supposed to use AIX on my office machine at work, so needed to learn what unix was all about. The second was that it was a royal pain to try to get a decent version of TeX on a dos-windows-3.1 machine (you would not believe the batch files I had to write), and TeX ran like a champ on linux even back in the old days when I took it up -- even before it could manage networking at all, it was a thing of beauty to write mathematics with. As a side benefit, I no longer had the moral dilemma of using pirated-shareware software. Even now, most windows users I know still violate license agreements --- made all the more restrictive by MicroSoft --- but I don't have to worry.
