Index File Contents under Linux

Maybe, but first you'll have to define "index" more rigorously. What data do you want to retrieve? Keywords, authors, file size, last-modified date? Do you want this to operate on text files, OOO documents, image files, movies, mp3s, or all of the above? How are you going to query the data returned? These are important questions; if you answer them vaguely, you will get vague and unhelpful responses. (GIGO, after all.)

This will be more difficult, since whatever you want will either have to run on the IMAP server directly, or download everything and process it locally (repeat every X days). Do it locally first, then apply what you learned there to your IMAP account (if possible).

FWIW, I find that keeping a sensible directory structure (broad, not deep) in ~ anddata-dump and using sensible file names means I don't really need to "index" anything. It's obvious to me from filenames and paths what something is and what it contains. Of course, YMMV, so make your actual requirements *explicit* and someone may be able to tell you about a possible solution. HTH,

I'm just about to give up on trying Linux (Ubuntu 5.10). This is my first attempt, and I am already pretty disappointed. 1. I can't make Macromedia Flash sites...
