Inetd question

Knoppix 3.8 HD install and apt-get upgraded

I have been pounding on making SWAT work but it would only give a connection refused message. Backing down through theetc-services and inetd.conf I decided that they had to be right after looking at them for hours.

So I wanted to restart the inetd daemon to see if I could possible force a usable error log but I couldn't recognise it in the PS list. Finally I just started inetd from the command line and got a start message and the process showed up in the list. Surprise - it hadn't been running.

I thought that inetd was a basic process that should always be running. Swat is the only thing that wouldn't work. Everything else did - samba, squid, apache (lots of stuff - it is a learning machine). So apparently it is not nearly as important as I thought.

Fedora Core 4 mouse problem
I just installed fedora core 4 (actually upgraded from existing FC 1). But now my mouse is not working as it should. It looks like CPU load is 100% (it is not) and if I...

I manually put it in the runlevel list and it works fine, but shouldn't it have been cranked up by the install? Especially since Knoppix starts everything but the kitchen sink in a default install. In fact, after the first upgrade, I have to spend 30 minutes turning off everything from YP to appletalk. How did it forget initd?

Thanx any Sam
