Intel Says: Linux Going NOWHERE ON THE DESKTOP.. 3865On Tue, 07 Jun 2005 15:54:08 +0000, TravelinMan It wasn't likely in the past because Linux was virtually unknown. But it is starting to gain popularity now, and is growing quite nicely into a significant OS.
Well, first off, Apple will no longer be purchasing, so a new market has to be found for those chips. Easiest way is to reduce the price to get compebreastive. Also, the cost in Apple's machines was never the *chips* and you know it. Hell, Microsoft is building a PPC-based *game console* that will be cheap, and Sony is building an even better Cell-based (which is in turn a varient of the PPC) game console that will also be cheap....yet insanely powerful! The cost of PPC hardware has never been due to the cost of the chips, but due, IMHO, to Apple pressuring to keep the cost of similar machines high, as they've done with IBM's. Now that Apple is moving off the platform, there's no reason for PPC systems to be kept artificially high priced any more. Well, the new PS3 will run on them (and Linux), they can't be that expensive.
