I know that mainframe hardware is popular in industries like credit card transaction processing because it is the only thing that can do it. Unix or VMS systems cannot handle that kind of throughflow and AS-400 is carefully managed to keep it from killing the big stuff off.

The idea that only Taiwanese can build motherboards just isn't true. They are mostly all stuffed by pick-and-place machines but the real reason none are made here-except some really expensive ones for embedded markets-is sheer greed on US manufacturers' part. Paying US wages as customary in electronics buttembly would add about fifteen dollars to the board price.

It's bizarre how expensive non-x86 boards are. I looked at a vendor of PPC motherboards for the post-Amiga market and he was gatting $750 for a board with a much slower processor than I could get in a whole Mac for $750-and this was before the iMac mini. VMEbus and CompactPCI boards are freakish no matter what CPU they have.

Personally I think we should put even a modest tariff on PC components. It would make improving the software very much more attractive very quickly.
