no. they won't. but they can be coerced into doing the right thing given time, effort and a judicious use of funds....

There is where you are in error. politics is EVERYTHING. having money doesn't hurt either. Still, the system (as currently setup) is slow to modify viewpoints... Sure, the GPL hasn't been tested as yet in a high court proceeding, but then, neither have many other kinds of contracts.

really? I hate to say this, but many of us do know how the real world works (we invented large chunks of it!)

heh. you haven't met many engineering types, have you? I know quite a few who are very adept at the "office politics" seen running ramapnt throughout corporate America.

of that I am sure. however, you forget that we technologists can pick up and leave to places elsewhere. if MS wants their way here in the US, fine. we will simply go elsewhere. MS doesn't have absolute power and the US Government can only do so much.

besides the world is quickly evolving and only those with our specialized knowledge can even begin to keep up. everyone else is falling so far behind that we (as technologists) are quickly becoming indispensable to maintaining the current electronic infrastructure. if we leave, it will fall apart.

nope. they are circling the drain and doing as much damage all around them on the way down. it may take years before they die off, but they will die off (and take a lot of good things with them when it happens).

another good example: apple computers. its already started happening with them
