Is Linux BSD or System V 539On Mon, 27 Feb 2006, in the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.misc, in article
emmm, yeah True - there are other fun things like which option do you use with command foo to get the information you want - is it 'ps -aux' or 'ps efg'? Or the fun thing of 'what does "killall" do?' ('man killall killall5' and find out). Any one who has worked with a real BSD and a real SVR4 is aware of dozens of little toe-stubbers like that, and why there might be ausr-ucb-bin,usr-bsd, and-or ausr-5bin directory strategically placed in your $PATH so that you got the "right" version of $COMMAND. Neglecting as others have mentioned that it can be set to use the SysV inits. Each one has it's own set of warts - I think that Linux has a few more "interesting" people, but beyond hinting that reading some of their posts and articles is entertaining as well as enlightening, I'm going to keep my mouth closed. Perhaps another point is that Linus has more people available to delegate to than Theo. Looking at the ChangeLog files is also a clue. MutexCondition Variable Ian Collins Threads are serialized, but timeslicing and blocking behavior tends to "mix things up", statistically speaking, far more than you apparently might... Old guy
