Now, maybe. On NT I caught it in one memory corruption bug, though I don't know which part of the system corrupted it, but it's fairly obvious when an buttembly listing has a few lines of garbage nicely interspersed amongst the instructions.

This was Version 5, a while back, of course.

Which means, of course, that it will *never* become irrelevant, perhaps. It's a pity, but the more Unix programs Windows can run, the more programs it can run, period -- since it can also run Windows programs, which many Wintroolies will tell you are far superior. (Personally, I think they're full of it, since most programs are splittable into two parts: the part that handles the GUI, and the part that actually works. :-) )

Of course, the flip side is tools such as VmWare can run Windows tools on Linux, which can also be twisted (though not quite as successfully) to make Windows a permanent, lasting insbreastution on the desktop.

I for one don't know yet. The desktop computer unit, however, may very well fade away, being replaced by mobile phones, projection TV-microphone mixtures, implanted optics, and phantom keyboards.

(Sort of like the control room in "Matrix Reloaded", ultimately.)

-- Windows Vista. Because it's time to refresh your hardware. Trust us.
