Is Windows becoming irrelevant 1207Is Windows becoming irrelevant 1209 notbob As much as I favour Linux over Windopze, Gimp does not (yet) come close to holding a torch... On Sun, 30 Apr 2006 15:13:27 GMT, Ignoramus19383
I would say 95% of people I know would be better off with Linux. Those that only use their PC for websurfing, email and office-apps would, and that is the majority of users. Distributions like Mepis is really easy to install and use. I would even claim that they are easier to install than windows, because you do not have to track down drivers on most modern distributions. My own PC is reasonably modern with a nForce4 motherboard and Radeon X800 videocard. After a windows install this does not work: -Display is 800x600 or whatever is standard without drivers -Sound does not work -No network access Last is critical if you do not have a driver CD ready. On a distribution like Mepis everything works, all I have to do is set the resolution of my display. Offcourse that will change somehow when the next Windows is released with new drivers, but Microsoft does not turn out new versions of their OS as while. There are some areas where windows is a better solution like Is Windows becoming irrelevant 1208 In comp.os.linux.advocacy, Plato wrote on 2 May 2006 16:22:01 -0500 20? I tried to convince one of my friends to use linux, but he couldn't use stuff like Cubase and the open-source alternatives were inferior to what was offered on windows, so the idea was dropped. -- np: Paul Oakenfold - Essential Mix 04-30-2006
