Just what kind of work do you do with image processing?

Let me share my experience. My photos are either family pictures, or pictures of things to sell on ebay or to show as my projects.

The only type of processing that I feel I need, is cropping and resizing. (I have scripts that make thumbnails automatically).

Ignoramus19383 I am also by no means a professional photographer, at best an amateur-with-some-potential. I own a prosumer type digital camera (Fuji S2Pro) and do the odd marriage, some product photography, nature...

On a normal day, I could easily process 10-20 pictures (usually takes me under a minute). The reason why it takes me so little time is that I use XV, which has great keyboard controls, that runs from a script of mine that downloads pictures from a USB drive, runs xv, deletes unedited pictures, etc.

My typical edit is

- a picture pops up - I select the crop area with a mouse and press "c" - I press "." a few times to reduce the size of the picture - I press C-s, ENTER, ENTER, ENTER to save the picture

The whole thing takes me under 3-4 seconds.

So... Yes, I do very little processing, but with my camera, the results are decent for what I want to do. I am not a professional photographer.

Aquila Deus on Sunday 30 April 2006 21:19 I beg to differ. The GIMP users mailing list and newsgroup get questions on that matter, usually from recent Photoshop migrants. Just about anything...

The productivity is, I think, unmatchable by any GUI driven programs. "select File, Open, go through a dialog, etc etc..."

I also find GIMP slow and cumbersome to use, but I never invested enough time to really get into it, as XV does what I want. The only reason why I sometimes run GIMP is to add text comments to pictures.
