On Friday 07 October 2005 14:44, R-T stood up and spoke the following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...:

It takes a little more than just that one line. As I remember from that one month in the past where I ever installed Gnu-Linux in dual-boot with Windows NT 4.0 - my first ever install of Gnu-Linux ;-) - the procedure is as follows...

First, you must make install LILO in the boot record of your root filesystem. This does of course require that you create a boot diskette or that you have a Live CD handy if you're going to do this during the installation of Gnu-Linux on your hard disk.

Then, you must make a copy of this bootsector into a file, which - if we buttume that *-dev-hda5* holds your root filesystem - goes like this, from a commandline prompt and as root, of course...:

dd if=-dev-hda5 of=linuxboot count=1 bs=512

Then, you must copy the resulting file - *linuxboot* - to your Windowssea-driveand if you cannot do this directly - i.e. because yoursea-driveis NTFS - then you must use a floppy disk as the intermediate storage, e.g.:

mount -t vfatdev-fd0mnt-floppy cp .-linuxbootmnt-floppy umountmnt-floppy

Then you boot Windows, log in as Administrator, open up a commandline window and type the following commands:

copy a:-linuxboot c: attrib -h -r -s c:-boot.ini notepad c:-boot.ini

Then you add the line to the file. I don't remember the exact syntax, but you only need to record the menu description and the filename, i.e. *C:-linuxboot.*

Save the file and exitNotepad. At the prompt, reset the file attributes to *boot.ini* as they were, i.e.

attrib +r +h c:-boot.ini

Upon your next boot, Gnu-Linux should be in the Windows bootloader menu. Do however remember to repeat the procedure - except for modifying the *C:-boot.ini* file, of course - whenever you update LILO, because you would only be updating the LILO in the Gnu-Linux root parbreastion, not the copy in the file on your Windowssea-drive...;-)

Hope this helps... - I'm a bit rusty on the procedure, as I haven't installed any dual-boot in over six years... ;-)
