I know several pro musicians who work with an Atari ST or 1985 Mac and old reel-to-reels to record their equipment. One of them even uses an old Boss DR-55 drum machine to program all his drums. Sure, they generally don't make rock music, but they are professionals nevertheless, e.g. they do it for a living. With which I just want to say that there are lots of different kinds of recording professionals in the music biz, all with different needs.

On 8 Apr 2006 14:29:04 -0700, Richard Smol So do I, in fact right now I am transcribing a pile of R2R tapes...

I actually have knowledge lots of people using Linux with no significant history in computers. Nowadays it's feasible, unlike some 5 years ago. Hey, if my 12-year old niece with no technical inclination can get one up and running okay, anyone can ;)

They likely couldn't care less, as far as you get the job done. Just tell them you use Pro Tools ... perhaps you can even use a Pro Tools skin to make it look that way ;) Hey, it's all about image.

I am personally convinced is it is your recording ability and added musical talent that is worth money, *not* what you use. When you can make great recordings nobody will give a damn whether you do it on Pro Tools, Ardour or on a stack of synched DAT-recorders.

BTW: you do realize that until recently it was very controversial to use Nuendo instead of Pro Tools for recording, right?

Some people can be very religious about their convinctions, yes. I am also a bit tired of all those "pros" who claim that Pro Tools is the best thing since sliced bread. I worked with it and think it's okay, but not much more.

Which all is relevant to recording ... how?

Well, I even dare to go further than him by saying that *all* such programs are crap. Every sequencer or recording program I know has some serious issues in usability and stability... and that counts for the ones on Linux as well. I wish I could program one myself, but my low-level DSP knowledge is near absent. So I just try to make the best with what is available on the market.

And YOU ... need to lighten up! ;)
