I don't see that? Where are you looking? The first post on Google is somebody complaining that another person called Windows multimedia production programs 'toys' compared to the Linux programs he mentioned. It appears that he is asking the originator of that comment to provide some evidence of his claims. It would be interesting to see how he can call the likes of Sonar, Audition and Protools 'toys'.

On 8 Apr 2006 20:09:22 GMT, Unruh Can it be done? Sure it can, but at what cost in time and at what level of sacrafice of plugins, outboard routing and...
It Only Cost A Dime...IF....You've Got The TIme!!! 1166
On Tue, 11 Apr 2006 10:48:54 -0700, colin.singh Well, sure. I need to constantly find new projects to keep me busy with my Linux systems. Since they always just work, I...

It depends upon the particular useage of the software. If it's a solitary person recording his creations, or those of his bandmates and so forth, it most likely does not matter what system is being used as long as it works for him. If he is running any sort of commercial studio, Linux is the absolute worst way to go.

For most musicians it doesn't.

It still has to be weighed against the cost in time. Learning a new operating system takes time. Researching how to use new programs in a completely different enviornment takes time. Maintaining 2 operating systems takes time. And that's buttuming his hardware will work with Linux.

Really? And what stability does something like Audacity have? It seems to be more or a labor of love than a commercial enterprise to me.

And Audacity's native file format is used by what commercial studios?

I don't believe anyone is stupid for using what works for them. That's a foolish atbreastude for anything. However, you seem to be approaching this thread from a Linux vs Windows perspective and that is not the correct way of debating this. You have to look at the industry in question and that industry uses a certain set of tools in general. Not having tools that are familiar to clients will lose gigs for you and that is a fact. This is not like some webserver locked away in a closet somewhere which nobody in the company accessing it even knows what it is running nor do they, as users, care. When a client walks into your establishment with a stack of CD's containing Protools sessions, complete with calls to effects, you had better have most if not everything they need to complete their project. When a band comes in and has a person "producing" their session and you put him in front of your Linux setup he is going to take a poo and I can butture you that unless you are charging well below the local scale you will lose the gig.

No, it was not. This thread was a continuation of another thread where a user asked for advice as he...

They are neither silly nor desperate. That's the problem with Linux people, they seem to have this paranoid air about them that puts them on the offensive when they try and suggest Linux for a particular situation where Linux may not be the best solution to the problem. Exactly what are we as musicians and engineers 'desperate' about? I have 10's of thousands of dollars invested in software-hardware-gear and I use industry standard tools that are not alpha software, have easy to use gui's and offer 24x7 support should I need it. My systems run 7 days a week and rarely crash.

Sure I would love to get all this software for free, ie:Linux, but Linux isn't up to the task yet and no matter how much you Linux children squawk it doesn't change that fact. Our industry is watching Linux and maybe someday it might make it to the D room, but for now it simply is a very poor option.

Schraalhans Keukenmeester The only problem with hosting the webserver yourself using a DSL or cable-connection (preferably DSL) is that you will be forced...

FWIW it's you who sounds desperate.
