Is this guy kidding 1164On 8 Apr 2006 20:09:22 GMT, Unruh Can it be done? Sure it can, but at what cost in time and at what level of sacrafice of plugins, outboard routing and operating a system that is not considered a standard in the field? As a personal system it really doesn't matter much if the person is using an old Atari and an ancient copy of Dr. T's. However if this person expects to sell his services to clients, or if this person intends to send files out to other studios for post work then industry standards must be adhered to. Maybe not to run a simple system that connects to the net and does email and so forth but setting up a multimedia production system is a complicated task under any operating system. Linux by virtue of it's user hostileness makes this task even more overwhelming. They don't which is why I don't use Linux. Clients routinely ask for gear lists and that, amongst other things is why they choose or don't choose me. Telling a prosepctive client that I am running a Linux system would be like the kiss of rest. After they stopped laughing I would have to explain it all to them and as soon as word spread to other studios I wouldn't get a single client. Sadly gear snobbery is a big part of this industry, you should know that. Here is an example of standards in the industry: Now you tell me how the hell I can maintain that with a Linux system?
Of course, but the tools matter especially if I am going to be sending work out to other studios. Musicians are a fickle breed and they want to work with tools that they feel comfortable with and that are industry standards. Using a foreign system like Linux only puts more pressure on them because they are going to worry about the unknown and in this case the unknown is Linux.
Obviously you are not in the music business or you wouldn't be asking that question. In effect you've just proven the OP's point that Linux people are constantly trying to advocate Linux even in places where it really doesn't belong and where they have no clue about that particular business. You seem to know less about the music business than the person who called Windows audio programs toys. Sell Linux?
