Linux is free, well almost free if you consider the blank CD cost about a dime.

BUT how much is your time worth?

Take a look at these 2 jokers ::::::::::::::

Ian Hilliard I am running Fedora Core 5 on my Thinkpad T42. I have had similar experiences in...

I'll admit it...I caught the Xgl bug too. I know it's just eye candy without much practical use, but it's just so damned *cool*!

Unfortunately, despite many hours of attempting to get this working on my own system and following many howto's and troubleshooting guides (it's amazing how many there are on the subject already), I have been unsuccessful even getting the xgl server to launch, much less compiz and all the nifty stuff.

The closest I've come to running it on my system is with the Kororaa LiveCD, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to have support enabled for my onboard ethernet (intel gigabit), so even that's a limited triumph.

Ian Hilliard Much longer? This longer battery life issue is an urban myth at best. All of the reports on battery life I've seen regarding Linux vs. XP from Linux...

Has anyone actually been able to get Xgl working on their own kit? If so, how did you go about it and what distro & hardware do you have?

Thanks for any tips!

On Tue, 11 Apr 2006 13:05:49 -0700, Multiples You clearly don't have a clue. I'm using SUSE 10.0 on a notebook that I carry with me all over...

Over the weekend I've been playing around with some different distros on a couple of old machines of mine, so I thought I would post a few of my impressions of them. This is *not* in any way a scientific review of all features, just some observations of both good and bad points, what I liked or didn't like, and how I got on with them.

The distros are:

Arklinux FoX Desktop Debian Etch KateOS Elive

All except Kate are the most up to date versions I could find.
