KDE 3.2.3: bus error after adding swap space

Hi,

since $SYSADMIN changed the configuration of my computer's swap space, KDE won't start on my Debian Linux box. I have a "private" installation of KDE 3.2.3 (hence $SYSADMIN isn't responsible... *sigh*), and that used to be ok until recently. Here is some more info:

I use startx with my .xinitrc being

xmodmap -e "remove Mod4 = MetaL" xmodmap -e "remove control = ControlR" xmodmap -e "keycode 115 = Multikey" xmodmap -e "add control = Multikey" startkde

(the xmodmap commands I use to enable some special German characters). X starts up, but then shuts down after a second and I have a screen of errors:

Problem with ACLs
Folks, I am trying to use ACL on a RedHat ES 3. I am seeing strange behaviour with permissions on...

opt-kde3.2.3-bin-startkde: line 158: 3156 Bus error kreadconfig --file kpersonalizerrc --group General --key FirstLogin --default true --type boolopt-kde3.2.3-bin-startkde: line 161: 3157 Bus error ksplash --nodcopopt-kde3.2.3-bin-startkde: line 165: 3158 Bus error LDBINDNOW=true kdeinit +kcminit +knotify Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directoryopt-kde3.2.3-bin-startkde: line 182: 3159 Bus error kwrapper ksmserver $KDEWM startkde: Shutting down... Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory Error: Can't contact kdeinit! startkde: Running shutdown scripts... startkde: Done.

(-opt is a symlink to my private installation)

I haven't the slightest clue what these errors mean and what causes them. Any ideas? And where is the relation to changing swap areas? There used to be 2 GB swap on my first disk, now there is an additional 14 GB on the second disk. But why should KDE care?

Any hints appreciated!

Enno

Consider not running xdm. Switch to a text console, uninstall xdm, and start X via "startx" instead. Investigate your X config file as appropriate. Try detaching it. Try using the normal one...
