I expressed myself poorly. "More complicated" was meant to refer to the difficulty in finding the proper file.

M audio under Linux with MM kernel under mandrake sound server crashes 4066
WHOLLY poo!!!!!!! Kernel? C-Programs? Loopback Configuration? poo!!!! You MUST be running Linux (AKA LINSUX)....... Look dude, if you ever intend to make music, not "music...

I found it. It already contains the lines for using the additional buttons; I never thought of this possibility.

Yes, several responses have indicated that.

I will do this. Thanks for the advice. I will find an alternative to YaST, which has struck me as a clumsy design right from the beginning. Since I haven't actually operated SUSE at all, I intend not to install v9.3 over the v9.1, but to let v9.3 installation format the parbreastions and start clean, from scratch. The new version should be here in another week or less.

I will follow the above. For better or worse, there are reasons for choosing SUSE, and I will have to live with it. I notice that some of the things that have confused me have done about the same to users far more experienced and knowledgeable than me. I'll try to keep my newbie questions here at a minimum. I am extremely grateful to you and others who have generously offered help, from which I have learned much, even at this stage.
