which tells me I have a 5-button mouse. Others now tell me that buttons 4 and 5 are for a wheel, so what I have (buttuming I have been told correctly) is a mouse with three real buttons. Since my trackball has four buttons, I thought to reconfigure. I also asked people, both here and on the LinuxQuestions site, how to buttign specific functions to the "extra" buttons. Nobody in either place has answered this question to date, which made me wonder if anyone had ever done it.

mouse as follows: "Explorer PS-2 0005 on 50 off" Actually I don't think "Explorer" is the right name for tis pointer, but never mind. There is a paragraph on the page reading as follows:

***** BUGS

The currently used implementation of the XFree86 misc extension is not able also is not capable of applying more than three buttons. *****

It is certainly possible that I am misunderstanding things here, being a newbie. But until I am corrected, I return to my original question: Is there external software which will enable me to use buttons three and four on my Kensington trackball? If the xinitrc file is the answer, I hope someone will clue me where to find it.
