Looks like you are usingdev-hda3 for the Fedora root file system ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Your Ubuntu root file system is probably not indev-hda1. Trydev-hda2. Not clear what you mean. Mount what, the floppy...

Pop clients always send a delete command if they want to delete a mail. The server does not delete it automatically. Clients usually have a config setting to do this or not, after each download, and most such clients set this option to "yes, delete" by default.

That is, the defaulting is between the client program and its user, not between the client program and the server.

If you have set this config option to "keep", you can meaningfully have a filter rule to (selectively) delete on server. Suppose for instance two people are sharing a mail account, and they need to download the mail contents to determine if it is really for one or for the other. One of them could be on a travel, using a laptop.

Imap is meant to be used as a permanent store for mail, ie., you download a mail to read it, but keep it on the server for future reference.

For this reason, Imap also has commands to create folders in the server's store, and moving mails to any such folder. Also, clients will not usually send DELETE messages until the user deletes the mail in the client's user interface.

But most ISP's don't want their users to gobble up space on the server, so they only offer POP, not IMAP.
