I have both on my box. The usb cable todev-sdb1 which is my camera device. Linux sees the camera as a vfat storage device. I can read and write to it, no problem. The card reader is a multi-card internal device which I got for $4.00 from Computer Rennaissance. It plugs into the on-MOBO usb extra jack. I enabled the MOBO to see 8-usb -- 2 on the MOBO built-in, two on a usb card, two on my Dell FP2001 flat screen monitor, and the multi-card reader. The card from my camera is seen asdev-sdb2 and the system reads and writes to it as a vfat storage device. The usb cable to the camera is most convienent when I need to do a quick download from the camera. The card reader is there if I want to plug in my second memory card, but is really superfluous to my needs. I opine that if you did a lot of digital photos you could swap cards in and out of your camera and keep on shooting, but I think for that an over the shoulder memory box would be better.
