Dances With Crows That is an interesting point that I was not aware of - that the drivers in X Window were independent of the OS that hosted it. I am using 6.9 of the xorg X Window distribution which has the same content as 7.0 but is not broken into component parts.

The man page for nv does not mention the GeForce Go 7300. xvidtune -show gave the output: "1400x1050" 122.00 1400 1488 1640 1880 1050 1052 1064 1082 +hsync +vsync

This suggests that the root window is 1400x1050 which I have confirmed by dragging objects on the rooot window and observing the coordinates of the mouse pointer. I am somewhat reluctant at this stage to use the binary-only nvidia module. Because I had the sources of the xorg 6.9 distribution I looked at the code in the nv directory of the drivers sub-directory. As was consistent with the man page, there was no mention of the GeForce Go 7300. Out of curiosity, I downloaded the nv driver file for the 7.1 xorg distribution. There, the GeForce Go 7300 is not mentioned in the man page, but it does appear in the source code. So it would appear that my chip is supported in the 7.1 distribution (maybe) but not in the 7.0 distribution.
