Linux 4GIGIndex File Contents under Linux Sun and said: Maybe, but first you'll have to define "index" more rigorously. What data do you want to retrieve? Keywords, authors, file... grobteam I have thought about the 4+4 option. I have never done anything about it because the box has only 4 GBytes of memory in it. If I put another 4 GBytes in there, since the price of memory has dropped over 50% since I put the first in there, I might consider enabling the 4+4 option. You see, to get any use out of it, you need some space for the kernel. Normally, the kernel takes (I believe) the top Gigabyte for itself (not that it needs that much), and allocates the rest to user-level applications. To make any sense, you would need a program (or perhaps a set of programs) that need(s) 4 GBytes. Then the kernel (and, I hope, but do not know) and the buffers and cache could go in the other 4 GBytes. BTW: it seems to me you would need a chip set that supports over 4 GBytes (mine goes to 64GBytes, but the MB has only enough slots for 16GBytes. But as I say, I have not tried this since I do not have enough memory to make sense, and I may well be missing something. If so, I am confident that my oversights will be brought to our attention right on this board. ;-) -- .~. Jean-David Beyer Registered Linux User 85642.
