Actually, that is incorrect. The GPL is about free software. The GPL existed before the term "open source" was even coined. The GPL imposes a few requirements on anyone who receives GPLed...

I happen to be running RHEL 3 ES. What it is selling is the binary stuff on convenient CD-ROMS (and you can get similar ones from other firms, such as White Box), with software on it that will do an installation for you that (anaconda) that may well not be GPL, and, most important to me, continuing support for 5 or 7 years (I forget which). So I need not upgrade my system to a newer version (for me, that would be RHEL 4 ES). But I am allowed to download the CD-ROMs (or probably purchase them) and use them for free (on the same machine) if I want to. The convenience of not having to rummage around to see if new versions of the software I run are available, and download and try to install them without dependency hell, and to not have to upgrade for years at a time are worth a lot to me. Whenever updates are available, a little Icon on the panel glows red with a blinking exclamation point. I just click to do the updates.

Besides, they had a 1-2 price offer for this at the time RHEL 3 came out.
