On Tue, 05 Sep 2006 08:09:10 +0200, Mads Skjern Ouch. You are exporting displays over a 56k network? And no one is complaining? Who cares if start-up is 10 seconds, if it takes minutes to load a Web page? Plus, the entire business comes to a complete halt when the server goes down. Or when the network does. Or when the server gets overloaded, like every day at 1:05 when people come back from lunch. I actually wasn't suggesting logic would drive the development. Much of what drives this is marketing, and the rest is a need for autonomy. We had a minimal-client server system. Most universities did. But the advantage of having your "own" machine, running the programs you want rather than what happened to be installed (and having to beg to get something else installed) won out. That, plus the problems of server downtime, and slow running of programs within shared resources, has led people away from that "solution". Try to run anything on your server when dozens of people are doing finite-element computations with thousands of data points. -- David L.
