On Sun, 20 Aug 2006 16:40:25 +0000, Tim Smith Sounds like a good argument, but ain't :-) I used to to think that kind of thing, but it's really false, you know. Recommend you read Jared...

The control center of my ISP for work was seeing some alert conditions on one of our servers.

What kind of conditions, I ask?

Oh, CPU, disk drive, motherboard....

Ok, what are the numbers?

Oh, well, lets see, its says, null.

So, you can't actually reach the machine (w2k server), right, as in it's offline?

Yes, that's right.

Ok, go into the cage, and see if it's up (our machines are rebooted every Sunday night at 2am).

(Goes to cage). Yes, I can log in.

Well, I can't ping it. Can you ping out from it?

No.

Do you see any error conditions on the net cards? Cables plugged in?

No. Yes. I did an ipconfig and it has an IP address.

Ok, reboot it then (no other choice).

Okay, it's up. I can ping outside.

Yes, I can ping and Terminal Serv to it.

So, a machine that boots and has no network access, yet shows no sign of error other than it cannot be connected to, or connect to any other machine. And a second reboot miraculously fixes it.

Sheesh...
