For ease of installation, hardware setup and configuration you will probably want to use the installer from a LiveCD. One of the tiny LiveCD distros like Damn Small Linux (DSL), Feather, Berry, Beatrix or Morphix would probably do. Since all of these are debian-based, you can use the excellent apt package management system to easily install and remove software. DSL has a very nice utility to facilitate this even more. While the CPU is a bit on the low side, the amount of RAM you have should help alot for playing various media, so long as you use a barebones media player like mplayer in console mode.
