Prefer older hardware to newest hardware, even if the vendor tells you it is supported. (The, experienced, vendor may run the latest hardware with his latest Linux distribution, but that does not mean that the hardware is supported by all current distributions, flawlessly in all configurations.) Look for harware that has been available for at least a year, if possible. Never use the newest available version, get one version before.
