Linux compatible hardware Obscurity, linux
Then just try to find one. There are some Linux magazines (in Germany) now with advertisements. Or ask someone where he bought his machines. What's the best and easiest FTP server to use in Debian for a small LAN I was told that wu-ftpd is very old and has a lot of security holes. I used to use it a lot when I had a dedicated broadband connection. Now, I have to...
Then I'd strongly advise you to get a system with Linux preinstalled. It you do not get the exact distribution you want to have, that does not matter so much. Just install another one. The point is that if Linux is preinstalled everything can be made working at least somehow. Also, on your order, exactly specify what must work, e.g gamma adjustment, sound, CD burner, or whatever.
Yes, new hardware and especially new types of hardware are generally a problem with Linux.
Maybe, maybe not.
Probably, the CD burner will work because these are standardized.
Then make him prove it by selling a preinstalled system. Incredibly slow file saving OK, I've got an issue.... I'm a beta tester for a particular CAD package that runs under wine. Considering most full-featured CAD packages are incredible bloatware, it runs pretty well. Except...
Prefer older hardware to newest hardware, even if the vendor tells you it is supported. (The, experienced, vendor may run the latest hardware with his latest Linux distribution, but that does not mean that the hardware is supported by all current distributions, flawlessly in all configurations.) Look for harware that has been available for at least a year, if possible. Never use the newest available version, get one version before. Moritz -- Dipl.-Phys. Moritz Franosch
