I think it depends on the facility and it's mission. The large studios are closing doors by the day and I doubt hiring a programmer to modify Linux programs is on the list of the surviving ones especially when the off the shelf Mac and Windows programs do the job. Disney had to invest money into modifying the Linux software to be able to perform the same tasks the software they replaced did. They concluded the cost would be worth it over the long haul and they had the capital to invest in it.

Gear maintenance has always been a needed task for everyone at one time or another. However the knowledge and staff needed to modify Linux programs at an enterprise level (ie:Skywalker) is quite high. Getting under the hood is fine, and electronics and repair is a natural for many engineers. Programming however is way too foreign especially when most of what needs to be done can be done with software already available. There will always be people interested though.
I would say this would fit in more with say a publishing house that wanted to customize a layout program or maybe a brokerage house or bank doing the same thing. IOW big places with lots of people and a desire to be different or better.
That's twisting the meaning around too far. It's not that they're too 'big time' to be considered pro, it's that they're not typical of a studio that has to scramble with outside clients in order...
