Linux will work with most dial-up ISPs. If you're not sure authentication method to try, look at "PAP" ... That's pretty much become the standard.

As someone who was formerly the sole phone tech for a dial-up ISP, (The same one I connect to from home, if you're interested...) I can tell you why most ISPs don't explicitly support Linux: There's too many different ways to connect from Linux, and some may be more "right" than others, depending on the user's situation.

(Be warned...My knowledge on this subject is a little dusty. I haven't researched a wide variety of possibilities since I was originally asked to compile instructions, way back when.)

First, which distribution? If they don't have the appropriate package installed, you may need to give them directions on where to get it, and how to install it. That varies from distro to distro.

Second, how do they normally use their system? If they use the shell, you should give directions on pppconfig, or maybe linuxconf. If they use KDE, there's a dialer you're supposed to use. If they use GNOME, there's another set of applets and applications available.

Third, and this is a relatively new issue, is their modem supported under Linux? It used to be buttumed that if you had a winmodem, you bought a hardware modem, or were SOL. Today, there's drivers for a variety of winmodems, and each driver may only work with a specific kernel version or series.

That's a lot of information to compile to gain the interest of what's seen as a relatively small group of customers. (But it at least gives *you* a place to start doing research. :)
