One: Robert Morris's worm that got out of control in late 1988. And of course that was not Linux proper, but the UNIX OS in common use at the time, an ancestor, in a manner of speaking, of Linux. That is about one in almost 20 years. That was an administration bug in that someone left a back door, designed in for testing purposes, open in the distributed version of sendmail (IIRC).

For those who complain about constant updating of Linux systems, it is not really that bad. I have not gotten a new kernel since about May 17, 2005. The reason my uptime is a bit less than this is because I took the system down overnight in June to run memtest86 to look for flakiness. Memory was OK and I buttume the flakiness of the program in question.

In the month of August, I got updates of cups, cups-libs, and sysreport gaim and ethereal, ethereal-fnome netpbm, netpbm-devel, netpbm-progs and vim-common, vim-enhanced, vim-minimal That's it for August, and I get all updates for the software on my machine from Red Hat automatically over Red Hat Network with the up2date program. Hardly an onerous burden.
