It's a big download (110M), but it's free speech and free beer. It's also available for OSes other than Linux. There are a number of other programs out there, like Abiword (reads-writes MS Word) and GNUmeric (reads-writes MS Excel). These are more lightweight than the OOO suite. Of course, real documents are usually written in plaintext, HTML, (La)TeX, or PDF, because the first can be viewed and edited *anywhere*, the second is similar to the first but allows images and more text styles, the third gives you great control over page layout, and the fourth can be viewed and printed anywhere but is not really editable. Almost all of the MS Word documents I've seen would've been better off as HTML. Who's "we", white man? :-) I hear there's this thing called Google that can be used to search the web for things you might find interesting or useful. Put "openoffice" or "abiword" or "gnumeric" into Google and see what you get. Most distros also include the programs I mentioned in the first paragraph right on the distro CDs.
