Local workstation permissions was: Why newbies don't RTFM... 4751On Wed, 14 Sep 2005 20:43:32 +0000 (UTC), Dave Vandervies staggered into the Black Sun and said: There's a script typically invoked when a user logs into a local X session. This script does some of that stuff (chown'ingdev-console ) but I think it doesn't do as much as it should. This is something that'd have to be configured, though.
? This sounds similar to what mount actually does. The "acceptable mounts list" is fstab. What I could've used in the past was something that didn't require editing fstab; just "mount -t smbfs-machine-sharemnt-somewhere ..." (Yes, I know about smbclient and the smb:-KIOslave, but there are tools out there that can't use those mechanisms.) Local workstation permissions was: Why newbies don't RTFM... 4752 It is similar, but I was trying to describe something finer-grained and more flexible than the checking mount does with fstab, that... This might work reasonably well given enough time. Not drastically changing things is a worthy goal, but remember what great strides Apple was able to pull off when they ditched OS 9 for OS X. Why newbies don't RTFM... 4754 Good for you. So has everyone who's learned to use linux. The main reason is because, since the typical newb asking the question doesn't provide any information whatsoever, just "me want", the reader must make... I think there are people working on this. "Capabilities" was the name for it. I don't know how advanced the userspace parts of it are, or what's required to convert a typical "run this as root" program to a "run this with capability SystemLocalFOO" program. The whole model sounds interesting, but the whole UID-0-is-God thing has a tremendous amount of inertia and it'll take time to see how it all stacks up. -- Matt GThere is no Darkness in Eternity-But only Light too dim for us to see Brainbench MVP for Linux Admin mail: TRAP + SPAN don't belong ----------------------------- penguins, is Tux." --MegaHAL
