Linux has a lot to offer research. In the audio field it offers control over all aspects of audio handling and, consequently, higher performance from cheap consumer hardware. The price is that you must get educated in order to use it effectively. For many (almost everyone here), this price is both too high and not relevant to their needs. For you it may be a price worth paying and you have a project to direct your study. As Sylvain suggests you will get a better response from linux hardware groups or groups like ALSA which develop sound card drivers for linux. For batch processing a significant number of open source programs are the best available but it can sometimes be difficult sorting these out from the not so good hobby programs. For interactive GUI programs things are not so good. Almost no commercial company releases on the Linux platform because they judge it not profitable. Several have developed and test released Linux versions of their Windows-Mac programs but none that I have been interested in have then produced a full Linux release. Linux produced GUI programs are nearly all disappointing almost certainly because of the type of programmer attracted to producing this sort of software rather than the more challenging tasks at driver and batch processing level. Do you know the reason your insbreastute wants to write linux soundcard drivers?
