Hi Simon -

Glad you are ready to make the jump away from the expensive, poorly constructed Windows World.

Currently Linux is running roughly 5-10 years behind Apple's 10.4 Tiger. It's often been said, buying into Linux is kinda like buying a Puppy.

At first it's cute and fun to have around, but later you find out it craps once a day, and pees 2-3 times a day, needs shots every few months and eats smelly food. So Linux, unless you want to go back into the complex, poorly constructed world of Windows, it's not the best choice.

Currently you can run Tiger on any Mac that has a built in FireWire port, this basically means any Mac made in the last 5 years. So a basic used Mac will set you back $200, fast used for about $400, or really fast and new $499.

OSX has the world's best software library by far. You can check all the breastles out here. (currently about 16,000 programs)

You can download any mac program from Limewire.

Try eBay for getting a used machine, just make sure they have 100% feedback rating and you'll be fine.

You'll really enjoy OSX, it's the most popular OS there is, and while Linux is fine if you want to "tinker", it's not a professional OS in terms of software selection or ease of use.

enjoy!
