If you already have a Mac, you can probably run GNU-Linux on it as well. Debian, Ubuntu and Yellow Dog are all available for the powerpc, as are most other mainstream distributions nowadays.

You can dual-boot with MacOS X if you like (this post is currently being written on Debian unstable on a Mac Mini also running Tiger).

That's not really true. In some respects (Core Graphics), it certainly looks nicer and performs better than the X11 equivalent, but aside from that, GNU-Linux offers quite a lot more than OS X in many other respects.

When GTK+ 2.8 is released in a few months, it will use Cairo to do the bulk of the graphics rendering (except for some Gdk-Xlib functionality required for backwards-compatibility). Cairo drawing operations may be 3D-accelerated using Glitz, which uses OpenGL. It sounds a little like the concepts behind Core Image, no?

If you look a little more closely at Tiger, you might be surprised at just how much is based on Free Software, from the core OS and toolchain, to the printing subsystem and drivers, to the internals of Safari. That's quite a lot of identical stuff, for something that's so far ahead...

Oxford Often said by who? mac users? Do you know what the first thing every mac user i've met says about their computer? Its pretty. I poo you...

The last time I looked, Microsoft Windows was the most popular. OS X is very nice, as far as proprietary operating systems go, but there's no need to distort the truth to advocate it.

You might also want to actually check how much software is available for GNU-Linux, and how easy to use a modern distribution is. Sure the Mac has the edge in ease of use, but it's not what I use to actually get work done.

Regards, Roger
