Mandrake 10.1 or Fedora Core 4

There is little difference between them overall. It's like which car do you prefer Cadillac or Lincoln? Mandrake for many years enjoyed the reputation as the best distro for the newbie for its easy, hands-off installation and GUI configuration and administration tools, but that is no longer the case. Many other distros are now just as easy to install and use as Mandrake, and Fedora is up there at the top of the list. Try them both. Try others. That's what I did.

I suggest you look at Mepis (www.mepis.org), which I'm currently evaluating before upgrading my Fedora Core 3 install to 4. I'll probably keep Mepis (both the install and LiveCD) for emergencies, but my main system will be FC4. However, if Fedora 4 hasn't fixed a memory management problem in 3 that required rebooting every few weeks to "clear," I may be looking for another distro.

Prior to FC3, I was using Slackware 9.x, but I don't suggest it unless you're fairly knowledgeable in Linux. My first Linux install was about 4 or 5 years ago with Mandrake 7.0. Prior to that I'd been using Amigas, since about 1988.

Odd networking problem
Symptom: Only one of the interfaces can contact IP adresses outside of the local machine. Enable eth1 means eth0 stops functioning. Disable eth1 means eth0 starts working...
