I think you need to read the article again. This is mostly server-side stuff. Though, it might bring more focus on Linux at the client-side also.

..anyhow..

These are just words and "paper"; what actually happens remains to be seen. Being a partner with Microsoft - especially at this level, has proved painful before.

Nothing can change the fact that Linux and the surrounding software is GPLed. The source code we have today remains, always grows and lives regardless of what happens in the $-world.

..about Linux and hardware-support..

Gotta remember that there is hardware that only works with Windows, only Mac or even only Linux. There really is no problem running Linux flawlessly on the desktop if one makes conscious choices when selecting hardware. That does not mean either Linux, Mac nor even Windows supports all hardware at all times or ever will.

There is always thresholds in relearning software- and hardware-knowledge when switching to a new thing. Like when switching from DOS to Win31-Win95 for instance.

I have been running Linux on desktops and servers since 2001 and what started out hard and seemed like "lasting problems" turned out to be these thresholds related to me relearning software- and hardware-knowledge.

..what would be the point in switching to something "new" if everything was the same?..

Anything worth considering requires some compromises but also has benefits; why are you here? If you're not conscious about this it will bite you until you are, regardless of which OS you switch-upgrade to or even what truly new thing you consider learning.
