Er... how is the movie going to be displayed if X isn't running? mplayer *can* use SVGAlib, but that's likely to be slower than using X11 and Xv.

Er... decoding DiVX;-) movie files that have decent resolutions and framerates in realtime requires some fairly significant CPU power (PIII-700 or so). A PIII-700 is not "minimal hardware" yet; maybe in another 5 years. DVD players have a dedicated bit of silicon that does MPEG-2 acceleration, but you won't be limiting this thing to MPEG-2 files, will you?
